H.M.S. "TARANTULA"

18th January, 1928.

No.152/37/1.

Sir,

At about 1346 17th January, 1928, when in Hill Passage

bound for Canton, "FAULKNOR'S" signals 1150 and 1300, re-

porting a piracy in S.S. "SAN NAM HOI" in which several

British subjects had been killed and wounded, were received

in "TARANTULA" and course at once altered for Pak Kai.

"TARANTULA" arrived Pak Kai at 2000 when the attached report

by the Commanding Officer, H.M.S. "FAULKNOR" was handed to

me.

2. This morning (18th January) I proceeded accompanied

by Lieutenant Commander F. A. Figou of H.M.S. "FAULKNOR" to

interview the Military Commandant, the police and represen-

tatives of the Merchant Volunteers. I also interviewed the

Commissioner of Customs. Little additional information to

that contained in "FAULKNOR'S" report was obtained, except

that all three authorities appeared very loth to connect the

attack on the "SAN NAM HOI" with the Seamen's Union. It

was only when they were informed that certain of the so-

called pirates had been recognised as discharged crew by

Officers and men in the "SAN NAM HOI" that they asked that

someone should be sent to identify them (Senior Naval Offi-

cer, West River's signal to Commodore, Hongkong 1230/18).

To/

The Commodore,

Hongkong.
